Oxytocin, the love hormone that produces bonding between mothers and daughters, as well as sexual partners, may help to reduce the symptoms of autism, according to a new study. French researchers found that high functioning autistic patients were better able to read social cues and facial expressions after inhaling oxytocin spray.

This most recent study seems to have confirmed hopes that oxytocin may soon be used as a clinical treatment for autism and perhaps other cognitive disorders which involve the inability to successfully process social information – such as extreme shyness or even schizophrenia.

Trust hormone hope for the autistic

Could oxytocin, the trust hormone, be used as a potential treatment of autism? Researchers in Australia think so and are currently trialling the hormone in the hope that it might cure one of the core and debilitating symptoms of autistic spectrum disorders – the difficulty in recognising and responding to emotion in others. Oxytocin has been found to play a key role in promoting feelings of trust and social bonding. Whilst it is still not yet clear what causes autism, it is quite understandable that those seeking to find the first effective treatment of it are putting the trust hormone under the microscope. The research is being funded by the Australian federal Government’s National Health and Medical Research Council.

Kissing holds the key to compatability

Boffins have spent a lot of time recently studying kissing – exploring the chemicals released (and even swapped) when girl and boy join lips. A study at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania found that the ‘trust hormone’ oxytocin rose in men during the act of kissing but, surprisingly, didn’t in women. The stress hormone cortisal, on the other hand, fell in both sexes.

Also this week, Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist at Rutgers University, made the claim that when a male and female kiss, the interchange of saliva is a means of enabling the woman to determine whether or not the man is a suitable sexual partner. “When you kiss you’re not just picking up if they’re a nice guy, you’re picking up if he’ll be a good father.”
