Oxytocin, the love hormone that produces bonding between mothers and daughters, as well as sexual partners, may help to reduce the symptoms of autism, according to a new study. French researchers found that high functioning autistic patients were better able to read social cues and facial expressions after inhaling oxytocin spray.

This most recent study seems to have confirmed hopes that oxytocin may soon be used as a clinical treatment for autism and perhaps other cognitive disorders which involve the inability to successfully process social information – such as extreme shyness or even schizophrenia.

Currently, oxytocin can only be bought without prescription in the form of ‘Liquid Trust’ an oxytocin ‘love’ spray that increases confidence, trust, and attraction.

Oxytocin is a powerful hormone that can even override a person’s rational decision making – at least that is what women are being warned in a number of online articles covering the Trust Hormone Oxytocin.

The News of the Worldadvises women seeking long-term committed relationships to beware the perils of the oxytocin induced ’sex haze’

There’s nothing wrong with sleeping with someone early on, but it can impair your judgment. When we get down and dirty, our bodies secrete the hormone oxytocin, which is nature’s way of making us bond with the guy lying next to us – even if, logically, you would rather gnaw your arm off at the elbow in the morning. Walking around in a sex haze is dangerous. Trying not to fall in love while sleeping with someone is like having that second drink when you have to drive. You may not go over the limit, but it’s risky. So stay sexually sober for a while, and listen to what’s going on in a man’s mind before venturing further south.

Victoria Costello, writing in the respected Psychology Today blog, gives similar warnings. She speaks of the powerful and volatile effects of oxytocin love chemistry and how the only way for a woman to avoid succumbing to it is to delay having sex with a new partner :

Once two lovers find their way to bed, it’s oxytocin that makes their first orgasms peak physical and emotional experiences. Further down the road, it’s the very same oxytocin that helps turn down the heat from the initial attraction phase by shifting to the production of those bonding chemicals that characterize long term mature love.

Psychologist Linda Savage also warns of the dangers for women between oxytocin and sex. She claims that it is oxytocin that creates a high for women after sex and that having sex just for this high can eventually deaden one’s desire for any sex at all.

Helen Fisher at Oprah.com explains how even though men and women have evolved to define intimacy in different ways, a blast of oxytocin in the male or female brain, will bring feelings of both intimacy and trust..

‘And get the oxytocin flowing. Oxytocin is a brain chemical that produces feelings of trust and attachment. Men get a blast of it when they kiss, women feel a rush when they hold a lover’s hand, and during orgasm, both partners are flooded with the powerful substance. So last but not least, enjoy each other physically. Good sex really does build intimacy.’

Boffins have spent a lot of time recently studying kissing – exploring the chemicals released (and even swapped) when girl and boy join lips. A study at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania found that the ‘trust hormone’ oxytocin rose in men during the act of kissing but, surprisingly, didn’t in women. The stress hormone cortisal, on the other hand, fell in both sexes.

Also this week, Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist at Rutgers University, made the claim that when a male and female kiss, the interchange of saliva is a means of enabling the woman to determine whether or not the man is a suitable sexual partner. “When you kiss you’re not just picking up if they’re a nice guy, you’re picking up if he’ll be a good father.”
